  • Great question! A therapist is usually one of a few different credentials: social worker, counselor, or marriage and family therapist. Each has their own graduate degree and licensing board. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) is someone who has completed a Master’s of Social Work program and met the requirements to receive state licensure, which include 2000+ direct client hours, clinical supervision, passing a state licensing exam, and a minimum of two years post-grad practice experience. Once licensed, clinicians meet continuing education requirements for the duration of a their license.

As a clinical social worker, I operate using systems theory. Systems theory is a foundational perspective in social work that understands people not in isolation, but as part of interconnected systems. Rather than focusing only on an individual’s thoughts or behaviors, systems theory looks at how relationships, environments, and social structures influence well-being.

  • A CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) is someone who completed 150 hours of alcohol and drug education in core counseling areas, accrued 1,000 hours of supervised experience working with people in substance use treatment setting, and passed a national examination for Alcohol & Drug Counselors.

As a CADC, I have both the education and practical experience to competently support individuals and families affected by substance misuse.
